My name is Alfons Hannes Pirker and I call myself „edelkastan“ (noble chestnut).
I was born in Lienz in 1968 and grew up in Berg/Drautal, where I live again with my two children after several years on the road. In 2016 I started to work intensively on the chestnut tree, which naturally grows in the forests of my home on the southern slopes of the Kreuzeck group.
Since 2019 I have been working as a freelance artist with the wood oft he sweet chestnut and the offspring of these special trees.

„I said thank you – and planted a tree. A sweet chestnut – it stands tall and strong in front of my house. I went through the forest and found trees – sweet chestnut trees – already lying, dead or felled by the storm. There I sat on the floor and started dreaming – at first of large tables. then of bathtubs. I brought the trees home and started my work“.

I have been taking pictures of my surroundings since I was 11 – photography helped me to visualize my ideas of space and time and above all to shape them.
For me, photography is architecture and expression of my innermost.
My close look at the chestnut wood and the idea of what can become of it have their origin and practice in my photography.
